Teen Therapy

Teen Therapy

As a mom, I've experienced the challenges of adolescence first hand. I understand how difficult this age can be for both teens and parents. Our stories shape us, and sometimes the stories our teens carry about themselves can hold them back.

Consider the parable of The Water Bearer's Pots: Every day, a water bearer carries two large pots, one perfect and one with a crack, to fetch water from the river. Over time, the cracked pot feels useless, no good and apologises to the water bearer for arriving home only half full. But the water bearer tells the pot to look around him and notice how its crack has allowed flowers to grow along his side of the path.

When I share this story with teens, they often see themselves in the cracked pot and identify with its feelings of not being enough. But they also recognise that stories can evolve and grow with us, and that a different point of view is possible.

During a Narrative Arts session, your daughter enters a safe and nurturing space where we explore the art of self-expression and healing through writing, storytelling, art making, or movement, activities shaped according to her individual needs.

During this experiential process, she'll learn skills to express her creative self and empowering herself with skills to navigate the challenges of adolescence with confidence. Our complementary introductory session allows her to experience narrative arts therapy firsthand and decide if the 6-part course is right for her.

And moms, you too are invited to a phone appointment to discuss how your daughter could benefit from narrative arts therapy.

While the program is available in person in Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay, we've also seen great success with eTherapy for young people. Teens appreciate the personal freedom and comfort of online counseling, allowing them to feel less exposed in their own space. It’s also more affordable for Mom.

Carla, a 17-year-old student, shares her experience: "eTherapy allowed me more personal freedom than other therapies I have done. Being able to work from my own space, I avoided a lot of the anxiety and distress I previously endured about therapy. The experience has been life-changing for me because I saw how I have stronger stories inside of me to build on."

Let's connect and explore how narrative arts therapy can help your teen thrive. You are welcome to a complementary 15-minute WhatsApp call to discuss your teen’s needs. (Click on the top right hand side of this page.)
